What is a breast reduction & uplift procedure?

A breast reduction procedure is where excess breast tissue and skin from the breasts is removed, to make them smaller in size. A breast uplift procedure is where the breasts are lifted and reshaped.

Breast reduction and breast uplift procedures are commonly combined for women who want to improve the shape of large, heavy breasts.

The breast reduction procedure reduces the size of your breasts while the uplift procedure lifts and reshapes the breasts making them lighter and more comfortable with a more youthful looking appearance.

At the same time as reshaping the breasts, the nipples are also lifted to an elevated position. In cases of breast asymmetry (when the breasts are not equal in size), reducing the size of the larger breast can improve upon the imbalance and restore a more harmonious appearance to your body.

At my Harley Street clinic I perform breast reduction for women who experience significant problems from having large, heavy breasts, including:

The Consultation

The first stage of your journey starts by attending a consultation with me – Mr. Abood.

We will discuss your reasons for wanting the operation as well as focusing on what you’d like the end result to be. I will give you my expert opinion on the best way to approach the procedure, which will also consider the condition of your overall health.

I will need to examine your breasts and take a series of measurements and first-stage photographs, which will be treated as confidential records that I can also use as a guide for the operation. I will ensure that I fully explain the procedure to you, to help you to understand what’s involved, including aftercare and any potential risks.

I understand how some patients can feel overwhelmed by having a procedure, so If it makes you feel more at ease then you’re more than welcome to bring someone along with you to your consultation.

I will always give you ample time to consider the options that have been put to you and will happily answer any further questions you may have at a second consultation, at a later date, should you wish to schedule one.

The Procedure

The procedure is performed under a general anaesthetic in a fully equipped operating theatre and usually takes between 2 and 3 hours.

Markings are made on the breasts, indicating the placement of incisions which go in accordance with the technique that I intend to use. The most common type of breast reduction uses an anchor type or inverted-T approach, where incisions go around the outside of the areola, down to where the breast meets the chest wall and then hidden along the breast crease (the inframammary crease).

During the procedure, excess breast tissue and skin is removed and the nipples are elevated into a new position before the wounds are closed with dissolvable sutures and dressings are applied.

I don’t routinely use drains for breast reduction procedures which makes the recovery process easier and more comfortable. Most patients usually go home the next day, wearing a supportive bra while the breasts are healing.

Aftercare & Results

The results of breast reduction procedure will be immediate but may take a few months for the breasts to fully settle into their new size and shape.

I usually recommend that you wait for around 5 days before showering to protect the wounds, ensuring they stay dry. In the first few weeks you will need to take it easy as swelling, bruising and tenderness eases. You will be provided a non-wired sports bra or post-procedure bra which should be worn for up to 6 weeks after your procedure and helps to support the breasts while they are healing. This will also help to reduce any swelling and make you feel more comfortable.

After about 6 weeks you can change to your own choice of bra. Massaging the scars is an important part of the healing process as it will help your scars to soften and fade over time. I will show you how to do this, what you will need to use and advise when you will need to start doing it.

Your body stays in good condition when you eat healthy and keep well hydrated. This too will help while your body recovers and repairs itself.

Your progress will be closely monitored through a series of follow-up appointments, which I usually arrange at 1 week, 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year.

I can honestly say that Mr Abood is extremely personable. He made me feel at ease from my 1st meeting with him. He explained what to expect from my surgery very well. I had inverted nipple correction surgery on my right nipple with Dr Abood around 5 weeks ago.

I am really happy with the result of my inverted nipple correction, the nipple has healed really quickly with very minimal to no bruising and looks like it was never even inverted in the first place! I am very pleased with the result as I have always been so self conscious about having 1 inverted nipple.

Am I Suitable for a Breast Uplift Procedure?

It is a natural process and very common for women to find that as they progress through life, their breasts become droopy from lost volume and the skin losing it’s natural elasticity. The effects of gravity, fluctuations in weight, pregnancy and breast feeding, and other reasons can contribute to a droopy or sagging appearance. If your breasts are droopy then it is likely you are a candidate for a breast uplift procedure.

Am I Suitable for Breast Reduction?

Identifying whether you are a suitable candidate for a breast reduction procedure goes beyond simply wanting smaller breasts.

There are a number of factors which will help to determine whether a breast reduction procedure will be a safe and successful procedure for you.

Most consultants would insist that you’re not smoking and are of an optimal Body Mass Index ( usually less than 30), as these factors will have a significant impact upon your body’s ability to heal.

A consultation with a GMC registered consultant should identify all the areas that need to be discussed in advance of any procedure.

Is a Breast Reduction & Uplift Procedure Safe?

No procedure is completely without risk but the safety and welfare of my patients is paramount.

I am a highly regarded and experienced consultant who has carried out many thousands of procedures. I will be the one who carries out your procedure in a fully equipped theatre, in only the most reputable hospitals and with caring and highly trained staff that will help to look after you, following your procedure.

All of this ensures your safety and well-being is a priority.

Will it hurt?

A breast reduction and or uplift procedure is a significant one and you will need to factor in the time required for your body to recover.

The procedure will be performed under a general anaesthetic, where you will be fully asleep. In the first few days that follow, a course of pain relief may be required. Simple, ‘over-the-counter’ painkillers are often all that is needed.

Following your procedure, you will wear a post-procedure bra which will support your breasts while they are healing and keep you comfortable.

Are there any side effects or risks?

All procedures will carry some degree of risk. I will explain this to you during the initial consultation along with any complications that can arise. Generally, you can expect to experience some swelling, bruising and tenderness to your breasts following a procedure for the first week or two. It is important to follow the advice that is given to you, regarding aftercare, as this will help with the healing process.

How much downtime can I expect?

Returning to work will depend upon the type of work you do.

As a general rule, most patients who have a sedentary or desk-based job can return to work by 2 weeks following the procedure. If your work is more physical, then you may require longer as it’s not a good idea to stress yourself physically when you are recovering.

With regards to exercise, most can resume aerobic exercise such as cycling, jogging or swimming by 6 weeks, but longer if planning to go back to resistance type exercise, such as lifting weights. Everyone recovers at different rates, so there will be flexibility around all of these timelines.
