Breast Augmentation/Breast Enlargement
Breast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures which I carry out and is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures requested by women in the UK and Europe. There are many reasons patients want to have breast augmentation but from my experience the most common reasons patients come to my clinic requesting breast augmentation are:
- they have naturally small breasts and have come to a stage in their lives where they want to address it
- they have lost weight and this has resulted in a loss of volume of the breast
- following pregnancy the breasts will naturally ‘deflate’ and this often results in an empty, droopy appearance to the breast
All of these reasons can affect how women feel about their appearance and therefore their confidence.
During the consultation I will ask you about your reasons for wanting to have a breast augmentation and spend time trying to identify what it is you’re trying to achieve in terms of size, shape and overall ‘look’. I’ll also be able to show you different types of breast implant and explain the differences to you with regards size, shape and texture. I’ll discuss how and where implants are placed and why; below the muscle; over the muscle; partial ‘over-under’. There’ s a lot of information to absorb and i therefore will always see you on at least two separate occasions before surgery to answer questions and go over things again.
I carry out most breast augmentations under a general anaesthetic (the patient is fully asleep) and as a daycase. The procedure itself takes approximately one hour. In other words, you come into hospital in the morning, have the procedure and are then usually able to leave the hospital later that afternoon.
Myself and my nursing staff are always available when the need arises but formal follow-up appointments with me are typically made at one week, 6 weeks, 3 months and 1 year after surgery.
No surgical procedure is without potential side-effects and risk, however the risk associated with breast augmentation surgery is very low in the majority of patients and my aim is always to keep every procedure as safe as possible, A great deal has been in the media over the years, in particular with respect to silicone breast implants and I will be able to discuss this with you in detail during the consultation and give you information to take away with you to read in your own time.
