What is Breast reduction?

Breast reduction surgery is an operation that removes excess breast tissue and skin from the breasts, to make them smaller in size.

This procedure can also help to improve the shape of large, heavy breasts, making them lighter and more comfortable with a more youthful looking appearance. At the same time as reshaping the breasts, the nipples are also lifted to an elevated position. In cases of breast asymmetry (when the breasts are not equal in size), reducing the size of the larger breast can improve upon the imbalance and restore a more harmonious appearance to your body.
At my Harley Street clinic I perform breast reduction for women who experience significant problems from having large, heavy breasts, including:

  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Difficulty in finding comfortable fitting clothes
  • The appearance of large, heavy breasts impacting self-confidence.

The Consultation

Ahid Abood Plastic Surgery - Your Consultation

The first stage of your journey starts by attending a consultation with me – Mr. Abood.

We will discuss your reasons for wanting the operation as well as focusing on what you’d like the end result to be. I will give you my expert opinion on the best way to approach the procedure, which will also consider the condition of your overall health.

I will need to examine your breasts and take a series of measurements and first-stage photographs, which will be treated as confidential records that I can also use as a guide for the operation. I will ensure that I fully explain the procedure to you, to help you to understand what’s involved, including aftercare and any potential risks.

I understand how some patients can feel overwhelmed by having surgery, so If it makes you feel more at ease then you’re more than welcome to bring someone along with you to your consultation.

I will always give you ample time to consider the options that have been put to you and will happily answer any further questions you may have at a second consultation, at a later date, should you wish to schedule one.

The Procedure

Ahid Abood Plastic Surgery - Procedure

The surgery is performed under a general anaesthetic in a fully equipped operating theatre and usually takes between 2 and 3 hours.

Markings are made on the breasts, indicating the placement of incisions which go in accordance with the technique that I intend to use. The most common type of breast reduction uses an anchor type or inverted-T approach, where incisions go around the outside of the areola, down to where the breast meets the chest wall and then hidden along the breast crease (the inframammary crease).

During the surgery, excess breast tissue and skin is removed and the nipples are elevated into a new position before the wounds are closed with dissolvable sutures and dressings are applied.

I don’t routinely use drains for breast reduction surgery which makes the recovery process easier and more comfortable. Most patients usually go home the next day, wearing a supportive bra while the breasts are healing.

Aftercare & Results

Ahid Abood Plastic Surgery - Aftercare

The results of breast reduction surgery will be immediate but may take a few months for the breasts to fully settle into their new size and shape.

I usually recommend that you wait for around 5 days before showering to protect the wounds, ensuring they stay dry. In the first few weeks you will need to take it easy as swelling, bruising and tenderness eases. You will be provided a non-wired sports bra or post-surgical bra which should be worn for up to 6 weeks after your surgery and helps to support the breasts while they are healing. This will also help to reduce any swelling and make you feel more comfortable.

After about 6 weeks you can change to your own choice of bra. Massaging the scars is an important part of the healing process as it will help your scars to soften and fade over time. I will show you how to do this, what you will need to use and advise when you will need to start doing it.

Your body stays in good condition when you eat healthy and keep well hydrated. This too will help while your body recovers and repairs itself.

Your progress will be closely monitored through a series of follow-up appointments, which I usually arrange at 1 week, 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year.

I visited Dr Ahid Abood and his team to have a squamous cell carcinoma removed from my nose which was followed by a skin graft. I was quite anxious about this procedure, especially as it involved a prominent part of my face. Dr Abood explained the process, possible side effects and outcome in a calm and informative way. After the procedure l felt relieved, relaxed and very glad to have met Dr Abood and his lovely team. Thank you!

From the moment I met Mr Abood I was certain that he was the Surgeon I wanted to perform my upper and lower Blepharoplasty operation due to his kind, calm and informative approach. Mr Abood explained the whole process thoroughly and I was always able to ask any questions that I had. I was 100% sure that I wanted this operation but after my initial consultation with Mr Abood I was 200% sure! Correspondence with Mr Abood's Secretary Justine was always a pleasure as she is efficient and understanding. I was so pleased that I was able to meet Justine in person. I chose the Weymouth Street Hospital for my surgery and it was a great choice. I was made to feel totally at ease. ALL of the staff there were so kind and caring but a special shout out to Arden and Suzanna (night nurse). Arden is so kind, caring and an absolute delight. I must also praise the food! Wished I could have stayed longer :) My recovery from surgery has been much faster than I thought it would be but exactly as Mr Abood predicted. After 4 weeks my scars have healed so well and in fact I can see improvement every day. I can now look in the mirror and like what I see already and am excited to see the end result. Thank you Mr Abood and Justine. I would not hesitate to recommend Mr Abood, Justine and The Weymouth Street Hospital. If you are looking for an excellent Surgeon look no further.

I am so grateful to have been referred to Mr Abood for surgery, by my consultant dermatologist who diagnosed a rapidly growing tumour on my leg as a Keratoacanthoma. With the need to have this removed as a matter of urgency, Mr Abood’s wonderful secretary, Justine, clearly went to a great deal of trouble to arrange for me to have surgery within 24 hours. I arrived at The Weymouth hospital where I met Mr Abood for the first time. His warm, gentle manner was so reassuring while he explained the procedure clearly, including the need for a skin graft and put me at ease before I was prepared for surgery. I cannot speak more highly of the whole experience, from Mr Abood and his delightful, caring team of nurses, to the theatre staff, they were all friendly but respectful, filling me with confidence. The care I was given was exceptional and the facilities at this hospital were outstanding. When it was time to have the dressing and stitches removed, Mr Abood did it himself and was so gentle that I didn’t feel a thing. There is no question that Mr Abood is an extremely skilful surgeon who goes ‘above and beyond’ to provide the best possible outcome for his patients. I feel blessed to have been referred to him.

If I can give 10 stars to Mr ABOOD, Justine and the whole team at the Weymouth Hospital I would. I’ve searched for months and had a few consultations before I’ve met Dr. Ahid Abood. He listened all my concerns and answered all of my questions. Very experienced, professional and respectful. I had a mommy makeover surgery ( tummy tuck with 360 liposuction, muscle repair and breast lift with implants) with him and what can I say, this surgeon is magician. Recovery was much easier than I expected. I am extremely happy with my results and I have so much confidence now. Huge shout out to Justine, this woman is a sunshine, so kind and supportive.

Related FAQs

Am I Suitable for Breast Reduction?

Identifying whether you are a suitable candidate for breast reduction surgery goes beyond simply wanting smaller breasts.

There are a number of factors which will help to determine whether breast reduction surgery will be a safe and successful procedure for you.

Most surgeons would insist that you’re not smoking and are of an optimal Body Mass Index ( usually less than 30), as these factors will have a significant impact upon your body’s ability to heal.

A consultation with a GMC registered plastic surgeon should identify all the areas that need to be discussed in advance of any surgery.

Is Breast Reduction Safe?

No surgical procedure is completely without risk but the safety and welfare of my patients is paramount.

I am a highly regarded and experienced plastic surgeon who has carried out many thousands of procedures. I will be the one who carries out your surgery in a fully equipped theatre, in only the most reputable hospitals and with caring and highly trained staff that will help to look after you, following your surgery.

All of this ensures your safety and well-being is a priority.

Will It Hurt?

Breast surgery is a significant operation and you will need to factor in the time required for your body to recover.

The operation will be performed under a general anaesthetic, where you will be fully asleep. In the first few days that follow the surgery a course of pain relief may be required

-simple, ‘over-the-counter’ painkillers are often all that is needed.

Following your surgery, you will wear a post-surgical bra which will support your breasts while they are healing and keep you comfortable.

Are there any side effects or risks?

All surgery will carry some degree of risk. I will explain this to you during the initial consultation along with any complications that can arise. Generally, you can expect to experience some swelling, bruising and tenderness to your breasts  following surgery for the first week or two. It is important to follow the advice that is given to you, regarding aftercare, as this will help with the healing process.

How Much Downtime Can I Expect?

Returning to work will depend upon the type of work you do.

As a general rule, most patients who have a sedentary or desk-based job can return to work by 2 weeks following surgery. If your work is more physical, then you may require longer as it’s not a good idea to stress yourself physically when you are recovering from surgery.

With regards to exercise, most can resume aerobic exercise such as cycling, jogging or swimming by 6 weeks, but longer if planning to go back to resistance type exercise, such as lifting weights. Everyone recovers at different rates, so there will be flexibility around all of these timelines.
