About this Condition

Small breasts, also known as breast hypoplasia or micromastia , refers to breasts that are relatively small in size compared to the individual’s body proportions.

Small breast size refers to breasts that are smaller in proportion to an individual’s body shape. There is no universal medical definition of what is considered a “small” breast size, as breast volume and shape vary naturally between people. Clinically, this may be referred to as breast hypoplasia or micromastia.

Breast size is most commonly influenced by genetics and breast development during puberty. Hormonal factors, including oestrogen, affect the amount of glandular tissue that develops, which can contribute to naturally smaller breasts in some individuals.

Body weight and composition can also influence breast volume, as breasts contain both glandular and fatty tissue. Weight changes may affect breast size over time, although this can vary from person to person. This does not usually indicate an underlying medical problem.

Perceptions of breast size can be influenced by personal preferences, cultural factors, and wider beauty standards. Some individuals with smaller breasts may feel self-conscious or dissatisfied with their appearance, while others feel comfortable and confident. These feelings are highly individual, and any decision to seek advice or treatment is a personal one.

Where appropriate, treatment options may be discussed as part of a personalised consultation with Dr Abood. This may include breast augmentation using implants to increase volume and improve shape, where appropriate. Any recommendation is made on an individual basis following assessment.
