Q&A abouts Cysts

What is a cyst?

Cysts are swollen soft tissue that occur as visible lumps on the skin surface, often on the face and neck. They are a type of skin lesion.

What are the different types of cyst?

An epidermoid cyst is a small, round bump under the skin, often with a blackhead on the central opening. A thick, yellow substance may drain from it occasionally. An epidermoid cyst is one of the most common types.

A sebaceous cyst is a cyst filled with a white, waxy substance, that may occur anywhere on the skin surface. These form from the sebaceous glands.

How do I know if I have a cyst?

If you are unsure if you have the symptoms of a cyst, please book an initial consultation with our clinic. In your appointment with our cosmetic consultants, we can discuss the range of treatments available, and decide on the best treatment for you. The symptoms of cysts can vary widely, and so medical diagnosis is essential before we can provide treatment.

Dark brown spots on the skin are moles, not cysts. These can be treated with mole removal, a service we also provide in our clinic.

Why choose cyst removal?

The majority of cysts are benign, and do not cause pain or discomfort. However, some patients may opt to undergo the surgical procedure of cyst removal for health or cosmetic reasons.

Cysts can become painful if they are infected, and therefore surgery will be needed to remove it. Cysts may also grow in size without effective treatment. In some rare cases, cysts may even be cancerous. If you have concerns about skin cancer, please contact the clinic as soon as possible.

Many patients also have cyst removal if they feel the cyst is unsightly and therefore damaging to their self esteem. Many cysts form on the skin of the face, scalp and neck, and may be visible to others.

Cyst Removal Treatment

How are cysts removed?

The most effective treatment is surgery.

Patients are provided with injections of local anaesthetic. The surgeon will make a small cut over the cyst, and then cut it out of the skin. The surgeon can then close the cut with stitches.

What happens after cyst removal?

You may experience some slight discomfort after the local anaesthetic wears off, but you should not experience significant pain. The cut will heal within several weeks, leaving only a small scar. Using a surgical procedure instead of simply draining the cyst ensures that the cyst will not return, as this procedure treats the root cause.

If the cyst is cancerous, further treatment may be needed. We will support you if you receive this diagnosis.

What are the risks of cyst removal?

There is a small risk of infection, as with all surgery. There may also be some slight bleeding.
