What is Mammoplasty?

Ahid Abood Plastic Surgery - Large Breasts

Dr Abood is a world-renowned plastic surgeon offering specialist mammoplasty in London. Mammoplasty, commonly known as breast reduction surgery, is a procedure that removes excess breast tissue and skin to reduce breast size and improve proportion.

This procedure can also refine the shape of heavy, large breasts that cause physical discomfort, making them lighter and more comfortable with a more youthful appearance. The nipples are lifted to a natural, elevated position. In cases of breast asymmetry (where the breasts differ in size), reduction mammaplasty on the larger breast can restore balance for a more harmonious overall appearance.

At Dr Abood’s Harley Street clinic, mammoplasty is performed for women who experience problems such as:

  • Back pain related to breast size and shape
  • Neck pain from heavy breasts
  • Difficulty finding comfortable, well-fitting clothes and bras
  • Reduced self-confidence due to the appearance of overly large breasts

Dr Abood is one of the UK’s leading plastic surgeons and a specialist in mammoplasty. Get in touch today to book your consultation at Dr Abood’s Harley Street, London clinic.

Mammoplasty in London

What to Expect from Breast Reduction Surgery

For women with large breasts, mammoplasty (breast reduction surgery) in London can make a meaningful difference to everyday comfort and confidence.

Heavy breasts often contribute to physical problems, including back and neck pain, bra-strap grooving and difficulty exercising. Over time, these issues can worsen. There’s also a psychological impact to consider: finding well-fitting clothes and bras can be challenging, and unwanted attention may affect self-esteem.

The initial consultation and all follow-up care are carried out at Dr Abood’s clinic on Harley Street, London.

Smaller reductions may be performed as day cases, whereas larger reductions may require an overnight stay in the CQC-regulated London hospitals where Dr Abood operates.

During surgery, excess breast tissue and skin are removed to create breasts that are smaller, lighter and more comfortable. The nipples and areolae can be reduced proportionately and lifted to a natural position. A mammoplasty helps to enhance shape, symmetry and quality of life for many women with large breasts.

Mammoplasty Procedure: What to Expect

Mammoplasty (clinically known as reduction mammaplasty) is typically completed in under three hours with Dr Ahid Abood, and you’ll be comfortably asleep throughout the procedure under a general anaesthetic.

Before your procedure, Dr Abood will make careful skin markings to guide incision placement and the reshaping of breast tissue. While techniques vary, the most common approach involves an incision around the edge of the areola, then vertically to the breast fold, and along the crease, discreetly positioning scars. This pattern is often called an “anchor” or “inverted-T” scar.

During surgery, excess breast tissue and skin are removed to reduce weight and volume, and the nipple-areola complex is lifted to a higher, natural position on the newly contoured breast. Incisions are closed with dissolvable sutures to support neat healing.

For added comfort and a smoother recovery, Dr Abood generally avoids the use of drains in mammoplasty procedures.

In many cases, patients are well enough to return home the same day.

Mammoplasty Recovery: Aftercare and Results

Mammoplasty delivers an immediate decrease in breast size, and the physical benefits can often be felt straight away. To aid wound healing, Dr Ahid Abood advises waiting around five days before wetting the breasts so that the dressings remain dry. In the first couple of weeks, take things gently while any swelling, tenderness and bruising subside.

Your post-operative care includes wearing a post-surgical compression bra for the first six weeks after your mammoplasty. This supports healing, helps reduce swelling and improves comfort. After roughly six weeks, you can return to your usual, well-fitted bras.

Scar care is an important part of recovery. Massaging the scars helps them soften and fade over time; Dr Abood and his team will explain how and when to start, and what products to use.

Looking after yourself, eating healthily and staying well hydrated will also support your body as it recovers and heals from the procedure. Your progress is monitored with a planned follow-up schedule, typically at 1 week, 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year, so that you feel reassured and supported throughout your recovery.

Mammoplasty Before and After

Common Questions about Mammoplasty in London

Am I suitable for mammoplasty?

Identifying whether you are a suitable candidate for breast mammoplasty surgery goes beyond simply wanting smaller breasts. There are several factors which will help determine whether this surgery is a suitable option for you.

Dr Abood is a Board Certified, GMC-registered Plastic Surgeon with years of expertise who will help you determine the safest and best decision for you.

Is mammoplasty safe?

Mammoplasty is a very safe procedure for the overwhelming majority of patients. No surgical procedure is completely without risk, but the safety and welfare of Dr Abood’s patients is his primary concern. Mr Abood is a highly regarded and widely experienced plastic surgeon who has carried out many thousands of operations. He and his team will carry out your surgery in only the most advanced CQC-regulated hospitals with highly trained and caring staff. All of this ensures that your safety and well-being are a priority.

Is mammoplasty painful?

Breast surgery is a significant operation, and you will need to allow the time required for your body to recover. The operation will be performed under a general anaesthetic, where you will be fully asleep. In the first few days that follow surgery, a course of pain relief may be required – simple, ‘over-the-counter’ painkillers are usually all that is needed. Following your surgery, you will wear a post-surgical bra, which will support your breasts while they are healing and keep you comfortable.

Are there any side effects or risks to a mammoplasty procedure?

All surgery will carry some degree of risk. Dr Abood will explain this to you during the initial consultation, along with any complications that can arise. Generally, you can expect to experience some swelling, bruising and tenderness in your breasts in the first few days after surgery. It is essential to follow the advice provided regarding aftercare, as this will aid in the healing process.

How much downtime can I expect after surgery?

Returning to work will depend on the type of work you do. As a general rule, most patients who have a sedentary or desk-based job can return to work by 7-10 days following surgery. If your work is more physical, then you may require longer, as it’s not a good idea to stress yourself physically when you are recovering from surgery. With regards to exercise, most can resume aerobic exercise such as cycling, jogging or swimming by 4 weeks, but longer if planning to go back to resistance-type exercise, such as lifting weights. Everyone recovers at different rates, so there will be flexibility around all of these timelines.
