What is Mammoplasty?

Ahid Abood Plastic Surgery - Large Breasts

Mr. Abood is a world renowned plastic surgeon offering his specialist breast reduction surgery in London. Breast reduction surgery, also known as mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure that removes excess breast tissue and skin from the breasts, to make them smaller in size.

This procedure can also help to improve the shape of heavy and large breasts that might be causing physical discomfort, making them lighter and more comfortable with a more youthful looking appearance. At the same time as reshaping the breasts, the nipples are also lifted to an elevated position. In cases of breast asymmetry (where the breasts are not equal in size, or the patient has disproportionately large breasts) reduction mammoplasty on the larger breast can improve upon the imbalance and restore a more harmonious appearance to the body.

At Mr. Abood’s Harley Street clinic he perform breast reduction surgery for women who experience problems from having large, heavy breasts, including:

  • Back pain due to breast shape
  • Neck pain due to breast size
  • Difficulty in finding comfortable fitting clothes
  • The appearance of overly large breasts impacting self-confidence

Breast Reduction Surgery in London

What to Expect From Mammoplasty

For women with large breasts, breast reduction in London can make a meaningful difference to everyday comfort and confidence.

Heavy breasts often contribute to back and neck pain that can worsen over time, along with bra-strap grooves and difficulty exercising. There’s also a psychological impact to consider: finding well-fitting clothes and bras can be challenging, and unwanted attention may affect self-esteem.

At his London clinics, including Harley Street, Dr Abood will see you before your planned surgery, and all follow-up care is provided locally. Smaller reductions may be performed as a day case in the clinic’s operating theatre, while larger procedures are carried out at CQC-regulated London hospitals where Dr Abood regularly operates.

During surgery (reduction mammaplasty), excess breast tissue and skin are removed to create breasts that are smaller, lighter and more comfortable. The nipples and areolae are refined and lifted to a natural position. A breast reduction also enhances shape and symmetry, giving a more balanced, youthful profile.

The Procedure for Breast Reduction

Book a consultation in Harley Street, London

Breast reduction (reduction mammaplasty/mammoplasty) is typically completed in under three hours with Dr Abood, and you’ll be comfortably asleep throughout under a general anaesthetic.

Before your procedure, Dr Abood will make careful skin markings to guide incision placement and the reshaping of breast tissue. While techniques vary, the most common approach for reduction mammaplasty involves an incision around the edge of the areola, then vertically to the breast fold, and along the crease—discreetly positioning scars. This pattern is often called an “anchor” or “inverted-T” scar.

During surgery, excess breast tissue and skin are removed to reduce weight and volume, and the nipple-areola complex is lifted to a higher, natural position on the newly contoured breast. Incisions are closed with dissolvable sutures to support neat healing.

For added comfort and a smoother recovery, Dr Abood generally avoids the use of drains in breast reduction (mammoplasty) procedures.

In most cases, patients are well enough to leave the following morning.

Aftercare and Results

Reduction mammoplasty delivers an immediate change in size and relief, with most patients settling over about six weeks with further refinement over the following months. To protect your wounds, Mr Abood advises waiting around five days before showering so dressings remain dry. In the first couple of weeks, take things gently while any swelling, tenderness and bruising subside.

Your post-operative care includes wearing a non-wired sports bra as a gentle compression garment for the first six weeks after your breast reduction surgery. This supports healing, helps reduce swelling and improves comfort. After roughly six weeks you can return to your usual, well-fitted bras.

Scar care is an important part of recovery. Massaging the scars helps them soften and fade over time; Mr Abood will show you exactly how and when to start, and what products to use.

Looking after yourself, eating healthily and staying well hydrated will also support your body as it recovers and heals from the procedure. Your progress is monitored with a planned follow-up schedule, typically at 1 week, 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year, so that you can feel reassured and supported throughout your recovery.

Breast Reduction FAQs

Am I suitable for breast reduction surgery?

Identifying whether you are a suitable candidate for breast reduction surgery goes beyond simply wanting smaller breasts. There are a number of factors which will help to determine whether breast reduction surgery will be a safe and successful procedure for you, and patient safety is Mr. Abood and the clinc’s primary concern. Most surgeons would insist that you are not smoking and are of optimal Body Mass Index (usually less than 30) as these factors will have significant impact on your body’s ability to heal. A consultation with a a GMC registered plastic surgeon should identify all the areas that need to be discussed ahead of any surgical procedure.

Is breast reduction surgery safe?

No surgical procedure is completely without risk but the safety and welfare of patients is the primary concern at the clinic. Mr. Abood is a highly regarded and widely experienced plastic breast reduction surgeons. He will carry out your surgery in a full equipped theatre, in only the most reputable clinic and hospitals, alongside caring and highly trained staff that will help to look after you, following your surgery. All of this ensures your safety and well-being is a priority.

Is breast reduction surgery painful?

Breast surgery is a significant operation and you will need to factor in the time required for your body to recover. The operation will be performed under a general anaesthetic, where you will be fully asleep. In the first few days that follow the surgery a course of pain relief may be required – simple, ‘over-the-counter’ painkillers are often all that is needed. Following your surgery, you will wear a post-surgical bra which will support your breasts while they are healing and keep you comfortable.

Are there any side effects or risks?

All surgery will carry some degree of risk. Mr. Abood will explain this to you during the initial consultation along with any complications that can arise. Generally, you can expect to experience some swelling, bruising and tenderness to your breasts following surgery for the first week or two. It is vital to follow the advice that is given to you, regarding aftercare, as this will help with the healing process.

How much downtime can I expect?

Returning to work will depend upon the type of work you do. As a general rule, most patients who have a sedentary or desk-based job can return to work by 2 weeks following surgery. If your work is more physical, then you may require longer as it’s not a good idea to stress yourself physically when you are recovering from surgery. With regards to exercise, most can resume aerobic exercise such as cycling, jogging or swimming by 6 weeks, but longer if planning to go back to resistance type exercise, such as lifting weights. Everyone recovers at different rates, so there will be flexibility around all of these timelines.
