What is a Pinnaplasty?

A pinnaplasty, often referred to as ear pinning surgery or otoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to reshape or reposition the ears for a more balanced and natural appearance.

Prominent or protruding ears are common and completely harmless, but for some people they can cause self-consciousness from childhood or adulthood.

Dr Ahid Abood is an expert cosmetic & plastic surgeon who performs pinnaplasty to gently reposition the ears closer to the head, improving facial harmony while maintaining a natural contour. The procedure can also correct asymmetry or refine ear shape following injury or previous surgery.

A pinnaplasty can address:

  • Prominent or protruding ears
  • Ear asymmetry or uneven positioning
  • Oversized or irregularly shaped ears
  • Dissatisfaction with previous ear surgery

This safe, effective procedure helps restore confidence and create balanced, natural proportions.

The Consultation

Dr Ahid Abood - Your Plastic Surgery Consultation

Your journey begins with a private consultation with Dr Ahid Abood. During this appointment, he’ll listen carefully to your concerns and goals, then assess your ear shape, position, and symmetry to recommend the most suitable technique for your needs.

Dr Abood will explain the procedure in detail, showing where small incisions will be made and how the ears will be repositioned. You’ll also discuss anaesthetic options, expected recovery, and realistic outcomes.

For children or teenagers, we take particular care to ensure both patient and parents understand the procedure and feel comfortable at every stage.

We believe in honest, transparent advice – ensuring you make an informed decision and feel confident in your choice to proceed with pinnaplasty in our calm, professional environment.

The Procedure

Ahid Abood Plastic Surgery - Procedure

A pinnaplasty is typically carried out under local anaesthetic adults, or under general anaesthetic for younger patients. The procedure usually takes around one hours and is performed as a day case, meaning you can return home shortly after the procedure.

Dr Abood will make an incision behind each ear, carefully exposing the cartilage. Depending on your anatomy and treatment goals, one or more of the following techniques may be used:

  • Cartilage scoring: reshaping the cartilage to create a smoother, more natural fold.
  • Cartilage sparing (stitch) technique: using internal sutures to reposition the ear without cutting the cartilage.
  • Conchal reduction: removing a small section of cartilage if the ear protrusion is caused by an enlarged inner bowl (concha).

The incision is then closed with fine sutures, leaving a discreet scar hidden behind the ear.

Aftercare & Results

Ahid Abood Plastic Surgery - Aftercare

After your pinnaplasty, you’ll receive full aftercare guidance and a follow-up plan tailored to your recovery. A light head bandage is usually worn for the first few days to protect your ears and support their new position. Once removed, you may be advised to wear a soft headband at night for several weeks to maintain shape and comfort.

Most patients return to normal daily activities within a week, avoiding strenuous exercise for a little longer. Our team will check your healing progress and ensure your results are developing beautifully.

As swelling settles, your ears will appear naturally positioned, symmetrical, and in harmony with your facial features. The results are permanent, and for many patients, pinnaplasty offers a lasting boost in confidence and self-esteem.

What our patients think

Potential Risks

A pinnaplasty is a safe and low-risk procedure when performed by an experienced surgeon – such as Dr Ahid Abood. However, as with all surgery, there are potential risks which will be discussed fully with you before your operation.

Possible side effects may include:

  • Mild bruising or swelling
  • Temporary soreness or tightness
  • Small risk of infection
  • Slight asymmetry between ears
  • Minor scarring behind the ears

Dr Abood uses meticulous techniques and modern methods to minimise these risks, ensuring your comfort, safety, and excellent aesthetic results.

Related FAQs

What age can pinnaplasty be performed?

Pinnaplasty is suitable for both adults and children, usually from around age five or six, when the ears have fully developed. Many adults also choose the procedure later in life to address long-standing concerns.

Will the results of ear pinning look natural?

The goal of pinnaplasty by Dr Abood is to create natural, balanced results that complement your facial features – not to make the ears look flat against the head.

Is the procedure painful?

Discomfort is minimal and easily managed with pain relief. Most patients describe a feeling of tightness or mild tenderness for a few days following surgery, which quickly subsides as healing progresses.

Will there be visible scars?

Scars are usually very discreet. Incisions are placed behind the ears, within natural folds, making them virtually undetectable once healed.
