About Drooping Mid-Face & Cheek Descent

Mid-face drooping and cheek descent are hallmark signs of facial ageing, often appearing from the late 30’s onwards.

The mid-face – the area between the lower eyelids and upper mouth – plays a key role in maintaining facial harmony and youthful fullness. As the supporting tissues weaken and gravity takes effect, the cheeks begin to descend, leading to a tired or hollow appearance and deeper folds around the mouth and nose.

Research shows that by our mid-40s, the face can lose up to 25% of its natural volume, primarily through the breakdown of collagen, elastin, and subcutaneous fat. This loss of support causes the once-lifted ‘apple’ of the cheek to flatten and shift downward. The result is reduced cheek projection, deepened nasolabial folds, and a softer, less defined mid-face contour.

Several factors influence how quickly these changes occur, including genetics, sun exposure, smoking, hormonal shifts, and weight fluctuations. Even posture and long-term sleeping positions can contribute to uneven descent over time.

While mid-face drooping is a natural part of ageing, it can sometimes make individuals appear older or more fatigued than they feel. Restoring balance and lift to the mid-face not only enhances facial contour but can also rejuvenate the overall expression, helping you look fresher and more vibrant.

At Dr Abood in London and Cambridge, our specialists take a detailed, holistic approach to facial rejuvenation. By assessing each patient’s facial anatomy, skin quality, and personal goals, we recommend the most effective treatment pathway – whether that involves surgical options such as a facelift or mini facelift to restore mid-face volume and natural definition.
