About Prominent Ears

Prominent ears, sometimes referred to as protruding or sticking-out ears, are a common concern that affects both children and adults.

While the condition doesn’t cause any physical discomfort or hearing issues, it can have a noticeable impact on confidence and self-esteem, particularly in social or professional settings.

The appearance of prominent ears usually results from differences in ear cartilage shape or positioning. In many cases, the outer rim of the ear (the helix) folds forward less than usual, or the bowl-shaped area near the ear canal (the concha) projects outward more prominently. These anatomical variations cause the ears to sit further away from the side of the head.

The condition is often inherited and becomes apparent shortly after birth, although its prominence may become more noticeable as a child grows. Around 1-2% of the population experience some degree of ear prominence, and while it poses no medical risk, it can influence how individuals feel about their appearance. Children, in particular, may become self-conscious at school, while adults might seek subtle correction for improved facial balance.

At Dr Abood in London and Cambridge, our experienced surgeon offers pinnaplasty, a highly effective treatment designed to reshape or reposition the ears for a more natural, proportionate look. The procedure involves refining the cartilage through discreet incisions made behind the ear, meaning scars are virtually invisible once healed.

Dr Abood’s approach is centred on precision, discretion, and natural results. Every treatment is carefully tailored to the patient’s unique anatomy and aesthetic goals, ensuring the final outcome enhances facial harmony and restores confidence – while maintaining a result that feels entirely your own.
