About Deep Nasolabial Folds & Marionette Lines

Nasolabial folds and marionette lines are common signs of facial ageing that develop as the skin loses its elasticity and volume over time.

They are the creases that extend from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth (nasolabial folds) and the lines that run from the corners of the mouth down toward the chin (marionette lines). Together, they can make the lower face appear tired, drawn, or sad, even when you feel otherwise bright and well.

These folds form naturally with age as collagen, elastin, and subcutaneous fat (the fat that sits just beneath the skin) diminish, causing the skin to lose youthful support and structure. The repetitive movement of facial muscles during speaking and smiling may also deepen these creases over the years, and lead to a permanent fold in the skin. Sun exposure, smoking, genetics, and weight fluctuations can further accelerate the process, while loss of bone density in the mid-face contributes to a hollowed or sagging appearance.

The depth and visibility of these lines can vary between individuals, often depending on facial shape, skin type, genetics, and lifestyle. While completely normal, pronounced folds and lines can impact self-confidence and how others perceive your expression – sometimes making you look more serious or fatigued than you feel.

At Dr Abood in London and Cambridge, our personalised approach begins with a detailed facial assessment to understand the underlying cause of your concerns. We offer bespoke treatments designed to soften and smooth deep lines while preserving your natural expressions. Our options include surgical rejuvenation such as a facelift or mini facelift, to enhance skin quality and restore volume.

Our goal is always the same: to achieve balanced, refreshed, and natural-looking results that help you feel confident and true to yourself.
