What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty at Ahid Abood Plastic Surgery in Cambridge is used to dramatically reduce the appearance of eye bags, fat bulges and drooping skin around the eyes.

Often due to combination of ageing and hereditary reasons the appearance of the eyes can change in ways that we find aesthetically displeasing. The appearance is usually a result of several issues which include excess skin and loosening of underlying tissues which make bulges more prominent and contributes to the ‘eye bag’ appearance.

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that not only rejuvenates the appearance of the eyes but the face as a whole. Dr Abood is known for achieving remarkable results, taking years away from your appearance with this treatment.

Able to be performed as a day-case procedure, blepharoplasty produces long-lasting results and can greatly boost your self-esteem.

Dr Abood and his small expert team of support staff and specialist nurses will ensure that you feel comfortable and supported from initial enquiry through to aftercare.

What our patients think

Blepharoplasty at AA Plastic Surgery, Cambridge

What to Expect

Blepharoplasty is a type of surgical eye bag removal that can correct the following conditions:

  • Droopy upper eyes
  • Bags under the lower lids
  • Hanging skin on the eyelid that obscures vision

It does this by removing excess skin and bulges of fat from the region around the eyes.

With age, skin can sag down from the upper eyelids, making it difficult to see; fat bulges can form under the skin and eye bags become more pronounced.

Through blepharoplasty, the eye area can be rejuvenated, achieving a youthful appearance.

Booking and Consultation

Book a consultation in Cambridge

The consultation process at AA Plastic Surgery Cambridge is conducted in a relaxed manner that allows you to feel comfortable discussing your reasons for seeking blepharoplasty. Dr Abood will ask detailed questions about your medical history, since some medical conditions and allergies may affect the surgery.

Blepharoplasty can be performed on both the upper and lower eyelids. The consultation phase is the time to decide whether to treat one or the other, or both.

Dr Abood will examine your face and eyes and give his opinion on how he can best achieve your desired results. He will answer any questions you may have and take the time to ensure you fully understand what the surgery entails.

You may request further consultations, if, after reflection, you feel that you need more support in making your decision.

The Procedure

Book a consultation in Harley Street, London

Blepharoplasty at AA Plastic Surgery Cambridge can be performed under local anaesthetic, local anaesthetic with sedation or a general anaesthetic. In most cases of upper eyelid surgery, only a local anaesthetic is needed.

Lower eyelid surgery can be carried out through an incision just below the lash line or through the inside of the lower eyelid (what’s called the ‘no scar’ or transconjunctival approach). Dr Abood will advise you on the appropriate approach for you. The surgery usually involves a combination of fat reduction along with some skin excision. It may also be advisable to selectively inject fat into specific areas around the eye at the same time-what’s called fat transfer- to try and give the very best outcome. If skin is removed then an external scar will remain after this surgery. Dr Abood is an expert in scar reduction techniques and can advise you on how to minimise its appearance.

Upper eyelid surgery involves the removal of skin, various amounts of fat and occasionally a small strip of muscle. The tissues are tightened and the wound is closed with stitches. At the end of the procedure an ointment will be applied over the stitch line and you will be instructed about how to look after your eyes over the first week.

Aftercare and Results

You will have several follow-up appointments post-surgery that will be spread over different time intervals. These will be arranged before you leave Dr Abood’s Cambridge clinic on the day of the procedure.

For the first days and weeks following the procedure, you may experience dry or ‘gritty’ eyes. Swelling, bruising and tenderness around the treatment area is also common. The tissue around the eyes is very delicate and surgery causes trauma that the body needs time to recover from.

We recommend that you sleep propped on a pillow to remain upright, which helps to reduce swelling. Dark glasses can be used to protect sensitive eyes from wind and daylight. Ice packs wrapped in a clean towel can help alleviate soreness.

The eyes will need to be kept dry for the first 3 – 4 days, after which any washing of the face and eyes will need to be done gently.

Dr Abood believes that aftercare is an essential part of cosmetic surgery and will closely monitor your recovery. If you have any concerns about your progress, Dr Abood and his Cambridge staff will be on hand to offer advice.

The full results of blepharoplasty can usually be seen after a few weeks, when the eyes have healed.
