What is Breast Reduction?

Ahid Abood Plastic Surgery - Large Breasts

Breast reduction is a surgical procedure that reduces the size and weight of the breasts by removing excess tissue. It can have many physical benefits for women with large and heavy breasts.

Large breasts can cause back and neck pain that greatly impacts the quality of life for many women, especially as they grow older. When it is difficult to find clothes or bras that fit in the chest, people grow self-conscious about their bodies, losing self-esteem.

There are many reasons why people seek breast reduction, and Dr Abood takes the time to understand them all.

From his Harley Street clinic, Dr Abood can improve the shape of the breasts during breast reduction, making them more symmetrical and more proportionate in appearance.

What our patients think

Breast Reduction Surgery in London

What to Expect from a Breast Reduction Procedure

For women with large breasts, breast reduction surgery can greatly improve their quality of life.

Heavy breasts often lead to a number of issues which include back and neck pain, which can worsen as the person grows older. There is also the psychological impact to take into account. Large breasts can cause a person to have issues with self-confidence in their appearance; especially when it is difficult to find clothes and bras in the correct size and if their large breasts attract unwanted attention.

At his Harley Street clinic based in London, Dr Abood will see you before your planned surgery and all aftercare will also be carried out there. If only a small reduction is needed this can be carried out in one of the operating theatres in the clinic however if more significant amounts of tissue are to be removed this will be done in one of the CQC regulated hospitals that Dr Abood works at.

During the procedure excess tissue and skin is removed from the breasts, making them smaller in size, lighter in weight and altogether more comfortable. The nipples are also reduced in size and lifted to a higher position on the breasts. Breast reduction surgery has the added benefit of improving the shape of the breasts, making them more symmetrical and youthful in appearance.

During your consultation phase, Dr Abood will talk through your aspirations for breast reduction surgery and advise you on the best course of treatment to achieve your desired results.

You will be offered at least two consultations with no expectation or obligation to proceed with surgery. Topics of discussion include the details of the breast reduction procedure, aftercare and any potential risks.

Dr Abood will need to take a series of photographs and measurements of your breasts to help plan for the surgery, which will form part of your confidential medical record.

Dr Abood is happy to accommodate more consultations if you feel you would benefit from more information. He understands the significance of the decision to go through with breast reduction and encourages you to take your time.

The Procedure for Breast Reduction

Breast reduction typically takes under three hours to perform at Dr Abood’s state-of-the-art Harley Street practice.

Before your surgery he will need to make markings on your breasts with a pen so that he knows where to place incisions during the surgery. The placement of incisions and the technique of breast reduction are something that you can agree on during consultation.

A typical breast reduction procedure cuts around the areola, down to the junction of breast and chest wall, and along the breast crease, where it is easy to conceal scars. The use of dissolvable sutures and careful incision planning will minimise scarring and make recovery more comfortable.

Breast reduction surgery involves the removal of excess breast tissue and skin, while also elevating the nipples to a higher, more youthful position.

Dr Abood does not normally use drains for breast reduction surgery, which speeds up recovery and makes the process more comfortable.

You will be free to leave the day of the procedure or the day after, depending on how much breast tissue is removed. This will be discussed with you during the consultation phase.

Aftercare and Results

The results of breast reduction surgery can be seen immediately, but results will continue to develop over a period of a few months as the swelling decreases.

You will be provided with detailed aftercare instructions and a scar management programme that will help the scars to soften and fade over time. We will give you a post-surgical bra that will help support your breasts for the first six weeks.

You will be able to shower the following day after your surgery, but you will be instructed how o do this so that your dressings and breasts remain dry for the first week.

Most people return to office based work after about two weeks, but for those that work from home, it’s often possible to be working at a desk from the following day. If your job requires significant physical activity you may need to wait longer than two weeks before returning.

Similarly, aerobic exercise such as jogging and cycling is possible after three to four weeks, but resistance-type exercise, such as weight lifting, may take longer to return to.

Dr Abood and his team will be available to contact throughout your recovery, and he will monitor your progress closely through a series of follow-up appointments. These take place at 1 week, 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year post-procedure intervals.

Ahid Abood Plastic Surgery - Contact

Harley Street is an avenue in Marylebone, London, named after the Lord Mayor of London in 1767, Thomas Harley. Its central location and development of spacious housing in the 19th century made it the prime setting for medical practitioners and surgeons to establish their practices.

Harley Street is close in proximity to all of London’s major railway stations: Paddington, King’s Cross, St Pancras, Euston and Marylebone. Two notable specialists who had clinics on Harley Street include Lionel Logue, the speech therapist who curbed King George VI’s stammer, and Sir Morell Mackenzie, the ‘Father of British Laryngology’.
